About Eriosyce chilensis (Hildm. ex K.Schum.) Katt.
Eriosyce chilensis, commonly called "Chilenito", is a critically endangered cactus species native to Chile. It grows along the country's coast in the area between Coquimbo and Valparaiso. The IUCN lists this species as one of the 100 most threatened species in the world. It is rare primarily because it has a very small native habitat range, and it is illegally overcollected to sell as an ornamental cactus. Two varieties of Eriosyce chilensis are currently known. The two varieties are similar to one another, differing only in flower color: Eriosyce chilensis var. chilensis produces red flowers, while Eriosyce chilensis var. albidiflora produces yellow flowers.
