This species has a circumboreal distribution, extending south into mountain ranges of the Northern Hemisphere, and grows in wet areas such as bogs. It is a thin, tall perennial herb that produces a slender, rounded, solid, mostly naked stem that reaches 30 to 60 centimeters in height.
