About Eriogonum maculatum A.Heller

Eriogonum maculatum A.Heller is an erect annual herb that grows between 5 and 40 centimeters tall. Most of its woolly leaves grow at the base of the plant, with a smaller number of leaves sometimes appearing along the stem. Its branching inflorescence holds many clusters of bright red and white striped flowers. Each flower is a few millimeters wide, with distinctly cup-shaped tepals covered in tiny, spiky glands. From a distance, the bright striping on these small tepals makes the entire flower cluster look spotted, which is the origin of the species' common name. This plant grows on sand, gravel, or clay slopes and flats, as well as in grassland and shrub-steppe habitats.
