About Eriogonum grande Greene
Eriogonum grande Greene is a species of wild buckwheat, commonly known as redflower buckwheat. This plant is native to northwestern Baja California and the Channel Islands of California. It is a mat-forming perennial herb that grows tall, stout inflorescences that hold white, pink, or red flowers. Most of its leaves grow at the base of the plant; they have wavy edges and can reach up to 10 centimeters in length. There are three recognized varieties of this species. Eriogonum grande var. grande, called Pacific Island wild buckwheat or redflower buckwheat, grows on several of the Channel Islands. Eriogonum grande var. rubescens, called San Miguel Island buckwheat or red-flowered Pacific Island wild buckwheat, is found on the northern Channel Islands. Eriogonum grande var. timorum, called San Nicolas Island buckwheat, is a rare variety that is endemic only to San Nicolas Island.
