About Eriogonum crocatum Davidson

Eriogonum crocatum Davidson, commonly called Conejo buckwheat, is a perennial shrub. It grows less than 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) high and 0.5 to 1 meter (1.6 to 3.3 feet) wide. Its foliage is a striking silvery green, covered in woolly leaves. This species flowers from April to August, producing clusters of tiny bright sulfur yellow blooms. It has no dormant period. Eriogonum crocatum is currently in limited cultivation for use in native plant gardens and xeriscaping. It prefers full sun and is drought tolerant. It rarely grows larger than 0.5 meters tall and 1 meter wide, so it works very well as an accent plant. It thrives in clay soils, and can also survive in some other soil types. It is reportedly difficult to cultivate outside of the southern California area, and it can tolerate light freezes.
