About Eriodictyon sessilifolium Greene
Eriodictyon sessilifolium Greene is a perennial shrub with stems that reach 1 to 3 meters in height. Its leaves are sessile; leaf blades measure 6 to 12 cm long and 2 to 5 cm wide, shaped oblanceolate to oblong, with coarse teeth along the margins. Leaf margins are slightly rolled under between the teeth. The upper leaf surface is covered in sparse to coarse hairs. The lower leaf surface has sparse to moderate coarse hairs on its veins, stalked glands on all veins, and short hairs in the areas between veins. Both the peduncle and pedicel are covered in coarse stiff hairs. Flowers are mostly covered in coarse hairs across all their structures, including the filaments and ovaries. Flower calyx lobes are 5 mm long, while the corolla is 12 to 15 mm long, funnel-shaped, and colored lilac purple. Fruits are 5 mm large and also covered in coarse hairs. This species has a chromosome count of n=14, and it flowers from April to June. It occurs primarily in Baja California, ranging from Ensenada south to San Quintin. In 2015, a population was discovered near Poway, California, growing on Santiago Peak metavolcanics. It grows on slopes, ridges, and ravines, and also occurs in disturbed areas, grassland, and chaparral, at elevations between 25 and 880 meters.
