About Eriocoma coronata (Thurb.) Romasch.
Eriocoma coronata is a perennial grass that forms loose bunches. Its maximum height is around 2 meters (6.6 ft), though it is usually shorter. Clumps of this grass expand via short rhizomes. This species resembles its inland relative Eriocoma parishii; the two occasionally intergrade in characteristics and are easily confused. The grass produces a large inflorescence up to 60 centimeters long, which holds large spikelets up to 2 centimeters long each, not counting an awn that can reach up to 4.5 centimeters. This awn has two distinct kinks. This grass is native to southern California and Baja California. It grows on coastal and inland hills, most often in chaparral, oak woodland, and yellow pine forest plant communities. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 meters (5,000 feet). It can be found in the Peninsular Ranges, Transverse Ranges, southern Outer California Coast Ranges, and the Channel Islands.
