Nomenclature and Taxonomy
Erigeron alpinus, commonly known as alpine fleabane, is a perennial plant species in the Asteraceae family that is native to Europe.
Distribution
It is widespread across most of Europe, but is not found in the far northern regions of the continent.
Growth Form and Foliage
This herb grows up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) tall, and produces spoon-shaped, hairy, medium green leaves.
Ray Floret Structure
Its flower heads bear narrow, thread-like ray florets arranged in two or more rows.
Flower Head Characteristics
During summer, the flower heads measure up to 3.75 centimeters (1 1/2 inches) across, and feature lilac-blue to red-purple ray florets surrounding a center of greenish-yellow disc florets.
Recognized Subspecies
Three subspecies are recognized: Erigeron alpinus subsp. alpinus, Erigeron alpinus subsp. intermedius (Rchb.) Pawł., and Erigeron alpinus subsp. rhodopaeus (Vierh.) Kožuharov & N.Andreev.
