This species is a dwarf evergreen heath-like shrub that grows up to 10 inches tall. It has dark green leaves, and produces rose-pink, bell-shaped flowers that grow in terminal clusters and appear in early summer. It was first formally identified in 1802. It grows in sub-alpine areas with acid soils, at elevations up to 2,800 meters in the mountains of southeastern Europe (including Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece) and northern Turkey.
