About Eriaxis rigida Rchb.f.

Eriaxis is a monotypic orchid genus belonging to the subfamily Vanilloideae. The only species in this genus is Eriaxis rigida Rchb.f., which is endemic to New Caledonia. Its closest relative is Clematepistephium, another genus also endemic to New Caledonia. Eriaxis rigida is found exclusively in New Caledonia. It is widespread across the main island of Grande Terre, and also grows on the northern Belep Islands and the southern Isle of Pines. This species grows in metal-rich, nutrient-poor soils, in habitats ranging from humid forests to maquis shrubland. It occurs at altitudes from sea level up to 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
