About Eriastrum luteum (Benth.) H.Mason
Eriastrum luteum is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family, with the common names yellow woollystar and yellow-flowered eriastrum. This wildflower is endemic to California, and is only found in Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties. It is a small annual plant that rarely grows up to the maximum height of 25 centimeters. It bears occasional thin, threadlike leaves covered in a layer of woolly hairs. The inflorescence is a cluster of leaflike green or reddish bracts that are densely coated in cobwebby white wool, and hold bright yellow flowers. Each flower has five rounded lobes, plus long, protruding stamens with large anthers.
