About Erebia fasciata Butler, 1868

This species, Erebia fasciata Butler 1868, matches Erebia glacialis in size and shape. The ground color of the wings is a dark sombre black-brown, with an incomplete russet-brown distal band that is crossed by veins and has no ocelli. On the hindwing, a grey-brownish submarginal band runs from the costal margin to the hindmargin, maintaining nearly even width across its length. On the underside of the forewing, the russet-brown band is lighter and more prominent, while the costal margin and part of the outer margin have a thin dusting of grey scales. The underside of the hindwing has more or less grey dusting at the base; the central area, which is slightly dentate along its outer edge, is dark brown. The submarginal band is pale ashy grey, and the distal area matches the dark brown color of the central area. Females are lighter overall. The female forewing has a brownish tint, and the female hindwing has a somewhat longer and broader submarginal band. In females, the basal area and submarginal band are whitish grey, and the central area and distal margin are grey-brown. This species is recorded from East Siberia, specifically at Pokrofka and the mouth of the Yenisei, where it was collected in June. Adult moths fly from May to late July, with timing varying by location. The larvae feed on species of the genus Carex.
