About Epocilla calcarata (Karsch, 1880)
Epocilla calcarata is a medium-sized jumping spider. Males of the species have an elongated yellow cephalothorax with dark brown margins. Black markings surround the eyes, and two rusty streaks extend from the third row of eyes toward the abdomen. Male cephalothoraxes range from 2.56 to 2.78 mm in length. The male abdomen is elongated, greenish-grey, and marked with a broad rusty median streak, measuring 3.89 to 4.00 mm long. The first pair of male legs is robust and rusty-colored, with a row of spines on the tibia and two longitudinal brown streaks on the femur; the remaining legs of males are yellow. The male pedipalp is small and yellow, with a single tibial process and a short, truncated embolus.
Females have a similar cephalothorax color pattern to males, with a cephalothorax measuring about 2.67 mm in length. The female abdomen is rusty-colored, with a yellow leaf-like spot at its center, and measures 3.33 mm in length. All female legs are uniformly yellow. The female epigyne is medium-sized, with a deeply carved posterior margin and two oval copulatory openings.
Epocilla calcarata has a broad distribution across Asia. It is native to India, China, and ranges as far as Indonesia, specifically the island of Sulawesi. This species has been introduced to the Seychelles islands and Hawaii.
