About Epitheca petechialis (Muttkowski, 1911)

Epitheca petechialis, commonly known as the dot-winged baskettail, is a dragonfly species that belongs to the family Corduliidae. Its flight season runs from January through July, which falls slightly later than the flight season of other baskettail dragonfly species. Specimens with the characteristic spots on their hindwings are the easiest to identify; these spots are what give the species its common name. Individuals that lack these characteristic spots are very difficult to tell apart from other species in the Epitheca genus. The caudal appendages, structures located at the tip of the abdomen, vary between species in this genus, and they can be compared to documented drawings or close-up photos for identification.
