About Epitheca cynosura (Say, 1840)

The scientific name of this species is Epitheca cynosura (Say, 1840). This species has a brown, hairy thorax. Some specimens have a triangular spot at the base of the hindwing. It is difficult to distinguish Epitheca cynosura from other species within its genus. The caudal appendages, which are structures at the tip of the abdomen, are different between species of this genus; these appendages can be compared to known drawings or close-up photographs to confirm identification. The flight season of Epitheca cynosura can start as early as January, and continues through to August. Individuals may also be spotted between October and December in north Florida.
