About Epirrita autumnata (Borkhausen, 1794)
Epirrita autumnata (Borkhausen, 1794) is very similar to the November moth, the small Autumnal moth, and the pale November moth. It is usually only possible to confirm identification by examining the species' genitalia. Out of these four species, Epirrita autumnata is generally the least variable, and melanic forms occur less often in this species than in the others. It also typically flies earlier in the year, active during September and October, though the flight seasons of all three related species overlap. Its caterpillar feeds on a wide variety of trees and shrubs, and the species overwinters in the egg stage.
