About Epipsilia grisescens Fabricius, 1794
Epipsilia grisescens (Fabricius, 1794) has a wingspan of 24–34 mm. Forewings are shining pale or brownish grey; the lines are black and very distinct. The orbicular and reniform stigmata are ill-defined, but separated by a quadrate black spot, which is sometimes located on a broad median shade. Hindwings are dull white, becoming fuscous brown toward the termen. This is a widely distributed species in Europe, occurring in the mountains of France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, and Scandinavia. Two forms, thianshanica Stgr. and hyrcana Stgr. — currently classified as subspecies of E. grisescens — are found only in West Asia. Thianshanica, which occurs in Turkestan, is smaller with whitish grey forewings that have less distinct markings. Hyrcana, which occurs in Persia, has yellowish grey forewings. According to Ruhl, the larva is brownish green, with white lines and dark oblique subdorsal streaks. The head is yellow green, marked with dark coloration. Larvae feed on Leontodon taraxacum. Synonyms include candelisequa Hbn., ? ignicola Hbn., latens Boisd., and corrosa H.-Sch.
