About Epiphryne verriculata (Felder & Rogenhofer, 1875)
Adult Epiphryne verriculata moths have a wingspan of approximately 3.8 centimeters. Their wings are most often a light brown shade, though some individual variation in color exists. Brown parallel lines run across the surfaces of the wings. On the hindwings (the second pair of wings), these lines are somewhat thicker through their midsection, with wider spacing on either side of the thicker lines. The moth's abdomen also bears a brown line pattern that aligns smoothly with the line pattern on the wings. This distinctive line pattern allows the moths to camouflage effectively against the dead leaves of Cordyline trees. Epiphryne verriculata is endemic to New Zealand, and is widespread across the country's North Island and South Island. It can also be found on Stewart Island. The species prefers habitats of wetlands and native forests, but it is also present in urban parks and gardens, where cultivated cabbage trees (Cordyline) are commonly planted.
