Epimecis hortaria (Fabricius, 1794) is one of the larger geometer moth species, with a wingspan ranging from 43 to 55 mm. This species occurs in two distinct forms: Dendraria and Carbonaria. The Dendraria form has a broader median area on its wings, plus subterminal lines. The Carbonaria form is darker overall, with white edging on its wings. The caterpillar of this species is thick-bodied, and has a swollen 3rd thoracic segment. Caterpillars range in color from gray to brown, with darker markings, faint pinstripes, and orange spiracles.
