About Epidendrum lacustre Lindl.
Epidendrum lacustre Lindl. was placed in the subgenus Epidendrum subg. Spathium by Reichenbach. Like most members of this subgenus, E. lacustre has unswollen stems that are covered by sheathes. Distichous leaves grow on the upper portion of the stem, and the stem ends in one or more apical spathes, through which the inflorescence emerges. E. lacustre stems can grow up to 1.2 meters tall. Its leaves are broad and obtuse, reaching up to 21 centimeters long and 7 centimeters wide. The 0.3 to 0.4 meter long peduncle grows from a double, scimitar-shaped spathe, and bears large flowers up to 8 centimeters across near its tip in an almost umbellate raceme. The 12 centimeter pedicel is four times the length of the ovary. The widely open green sepals and petals are linear with pointed tips. The white lip is adnate to the column all the way to its apex, is nearly cordate at the point it diverges from the column, and is either barely divided into three lobes or fully undivided, with a pointed tip at its distal end. The callus is made up of two pointed lumps located just beyond the column, separated by a 4 centimeter long raised keel.
