About Ennomos fuscantaria (Haworth, 1809)

Ennomos fuscantaria, commonly known as the dusky thorn, is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. This species is distributed in the western Palearctic realm. Its range extends from western Europe and central Scandinavia south to the northern Mediterranean, and east as far as Russia. The wingspan of Ennomos fuscantaria measures 35 to 40 mm. Its base wing color is ochre yellow. The forewings bear violet-grey flecks and an oblong discal spot, and the wing fasciae (bands) are grey-brown. On the hindwings, a small discal spot is hidden by a grey-brown transverse line. This species is similar in appearance to other moths in the Ennomos genus. Depending on location, adult moths are active in flight from July to October. The caterpillars of Ennomos fuscantaria feed on ash (Fraxinus excelsior), as well as privet (various Ligustrum species) and other types of shrubs.
