About Enkianthus perulatus (Miq.) C.K.Schneid.
Enkianthus perulatus, commonly known as dodan-tsutsuji, is a species of flowering plant in the Ericaceae family that is native to Japan. It is a compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub that eventually reaches 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) in both height and width. In spring, it produces pendent umbels of pure white, bell-shaped flowers. After flowering, its leaves turn brilliant red and yellow during the autumn season. Its leaves are ovate, and their color ranges from medium green to bright green when they are fully grown during the growing season. This plant grows naturally in sunny woodland areas. In cultivation, Enkianthus perulatus has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is designated the official flower of Chizu, Tottori, where a doudan tsutsuji festival is held each year in May.
