About Enallagma exsulans (Hagen, 1861)

Enallagma exsulans (Hagen, 1861), commonly called the stream bluet, is a species of American bluet damselfly belonging to the family Coenagrionidae. Adults of this species reach a total length of 29 to 37 millimeters. While most other bluet species favor still water habitats like ponds and lakes, the stream bluet matches its common name and is most adapted to moving waters. It can typically be found along small to medium-sized rivers, and it is occasionally also found at lakes. For most North American damselfly species, only males have a blue tip on the abdomen. Enallagma exsulans is an uncommon case where females also have a blue abdominal tip. The best season to find stream bluets is summer. This species is distributed across the United States in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. It is also found in Canada in the following provinces and territories: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.
