About Empetrum rubrum Vahl ex Willd.

Empetrum rubrum Vahl ex Willd. is a plant species in the heath family, Ericaceae. It is commonly called red crowberry or diddle-dee, and is known as Murtilla de Magallanes in Chilean Spanish. This species is distributed from Talca (35°S) to Cape Horn (55°S) in Chile, as well as in adjacent areas of Argentina, the Falkland Islands, and Tristan da Cunha. Laguna del Maule is one of its northernmost natural growing locations. In Chile, it often grows in high-altitude areas near the tree line, and is able to tolerate alpine conditions including strong winds and high sun exposure. Across large areas of lowland and upland dwarf shrub heath in the Falkland Islands, it is the dominant species. The fruits of Empetrum rubrum are edible.
