About Empetrum eamesii Fernald & Wiegand
Empetrum eamesii Fernald & Wiegand is a low-lying shrub that grows with prostrate stems, forming a ground-hugging mat. Its leaves grow in an alternating arrangement or in whorls. Solitary flowers develop near branch tips, and each flower has 3 white petals. The fruits are spherical; they are pink or red for subspecies eamesii, and purple to reddish-purple for subspecies atropurpureum. This species is native to eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. It has been recorded growing in sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and alpine heath across Québec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York State, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Cook County Minnesota, and St. Pierre & Miquelon.
