About Elymus californicus (Bol. ex Thurb.) Gould

Elymus californicus, commonly called California bottlebrush grass, is a species of wild rye. It is endemic to California, where it is an uncommon species found only in a small number of counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This grass grows to a height between 1 and 2 meters. Its tall, erect stem is nearly leafless, with only occasional sheathing leaves that have blades 10 to 20 centimeters long. It produces an upright inflorescence that curves as its grains develop and become heavier. Each inflorescence is split into 3 or 4 nodes, with 3 to 4 spikelets growing at each node. Each spikelet measures between 1 and 2 centimeters long, not including its long awn that is approximately 2 centimeters long.
