This species is native to Asia, though the exact boundaries of its original native range remain unclear. It has been introduced to India, parts of North America, and Europe. It can be found growing in habitats including riverbanks, forests, and hills. Elsholtzia ciliata is commonly used in herbal medicine, where it is regarded as having carminative and astringent properties. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant, and prefers moist soil. It grows most often on exposed rocky slopes and other open, gravelly areas. It is classified as a noxious weed and is banned in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was first recorded in the Americas in 1889.
