About Elephantorrhiza elephantina (Burch.) Skeels

Elephantorrhiza elephantina (Burch.) Skeels has a suffrutescent growth habit that is typical of its genus. It produces unbranched, unarmed aerial stems that grow to less than one metre in height. Different populations of this species show considerable variation in how many pairs of pinnae they produce, as well as in the number, size, and shape of their leaflets. This species flowers from September through November, and is primarily pollinated by the African honeybee. Its flowering racemes typically grow only on the lower section of the stem, which means the mature pods usually hang just above ground level, or rest hidden on the ground itself.
