About Eleocharis nitida Fernald

Eleocharis nitida Fernald is a perennial plant that grows from scaly, purplish rhizomes. Its culms reach 1 to 8 inches in height. The spikelets of its inflorescence are 2.0–4.5 mm (0.08–0.18 inches) long, and each spikelet holds 5 to 30 flowers. The plant produces a three-angled, bristly achene that ranges in color from pale yellow to orangish; this achene matures between mid-June and mid-October. Its native range covers parts of Canada: Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan, and US states: Alaska, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. It is listed as a species of special concern in the US state of Minnesota. In Minnesota, it grows in full sun in moist to wet soils, and can be found in areas with disturbed soil, ditches, along trails, shallow depressions, and bog pools.
