About Elegia capensis (Burm.f.) Schelpe

Elegia capensis (Burm.f.) Schelpe, commonly known as horsetail restio or bergbamboes, is a grass-like flowering plant species in the genus Elegia. It is native to the Fynbos region of the Cape Provinces of South Africa, and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This species strongly resembles scouring rushes or horsetails (Equisetum spp.). It produces whorls of roughly 25 side shoots, spaced 8 to 10 cm (3.1 to 3.9 inches) apart along its stems. Most plants grow to around 1.5 m (4 feet 11 inches) in height, and can occasionally reach 3 m (9.8 feet) tall. Its flowers are brown and inconspicuous.
