The intermediate egret (here treated as the subspecies Egretta intermedia brachyrhyncha) is intermediate in size between the great egret and smaller white egrets such as the little egret and cattle egret, and it is closer in size to the little egret than the great egret.
Standard Measurements
This bird measures roughly 56 to 72 cm (22 to 28 inches) in total length, has a wingspan of 105 to 115 cm (41 to 45 inches), and weighs approximately 400 grams (14 ounces).
Non-breeding Plumage
It has all-white plumage, generally dark legs, and a fairly thick yellow bill.
Breeding Appearance Variations
Breeding individuals may show regional variations in appearance: they can have a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on the breast and back, and dull yellow or pink coloration on the upper portions of their legs.

Male and female intermediate egrets share similar appearance.
