About Echinopogon ovatus (G.Forst.) P.Beauv.

Echinopogon ovatus (G.Forst.) P.Beauv. is a lax, tufted grass that reaches a maximum height of 140 cm (55 in). Its culms are upright to decumbent, and bear an ovate panicle holding 20–30 green spikelets with finely scabrid awns. This species can be confused with Cynosurus echinatus, but it can be distinguished by its lack of clustered spikelets. Echinopogon ovatus is indigenous to both Australia and New Zealand. In New Zealand, it occurs throughout both of the country’s main islands, though it is rarer in the western regions of the South Island. It is also found on the Three Kings Islands and the Chatham Islands. This grass grows from sea level to montane elevations. It occurs in forest and scrub environments, as well as on dry banks and in waste places.
