About Echinocereus palmeri Britton & Rose
Echinocoreus palmeri Britton & Rose is a cactus that can grow with a single stem or multiple side shoots, and develops a thick, prominent taproot. Its dark green shoots are ovate to cylindrical, tapering toward their tips. Annual new growth creates visible constrictions along the shoots. Shoots are typically 3 to 8 centimeters long, occasionally reaching 15 centimeters, and measure 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The plant has six to twelve low, faintly tubercled ribs. It bears one to two, sometimes up to three, slender, ascending central spines that are brown to black and 1 to 2 centimeters long. It also has eight to sixteen whitish radial spines with darker tips; these lie flat against the shoot surface and are 0.4 to 0.8 centimeters long. The funnel-shaped, fragrant flowers are pinkish-lavender to pink, grow near the tips of the shoots, reach up to 6 centimeters in length, and can grow 6 centimeters, occasionally up to 9 centimeters, in diameter. Its egg-shaped fruits are green and contain white pulp. Echinocereus palmeri is native to the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango and Zacatecas.
