About Eastwoodia elegans Brandegee

Eastwoodia is a North American plant genus in the family Asteraceae. It contains only one species, Eastwoodia elegans Brandegee, a flowering plant with the common names yellow mock aster or yellow aster. This species is endemic to California, and is found exclusively on grasslands and hillsides in central California, ranging from the Bay Area south to the Tehachapi Mountains. Eastwoodia elegans is a shrub that grows multiple erect, branched stems reaching up to 100 cm (40 inches) tall. A single plant can produce several yellow flower heads; each flower head holds up to 40 disc florets and has no ray florets. The stems have shredding bark, and bear small leaves that are rarely more than 5 cm (2 inches) long. The genus Eastwoodia was named in honor of Canadian-American botanist Alice Eastwood, who lived from 1859 to 1953.
