About Eagris nottoana (Wallengren, 1857)

Eagris nottoana, commonly called the rufous-winged flat or rufous-winged elfin, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae. Its scientific name was first described by Wallengren in 1857. This species is distributed across a range from South Africa north to Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia, and it also occurs on Madagascar. Males of this butterfly have a wingspan of 35 to 42 mm (1.4 to 1.7 inches), while females have a slightly larger wingspan of 39 to 43 mm (1.5 to 1.7 inches). In warmer regions where Eagris nottoana lives, adult butterflies are active year-round, with the highest population numbers occurring in summer and autumn. The larval caterpillars of this species feed on the leaves of five plant species: Grewia occidentalis, Dombeya cymosa, Scutia commersoni, Scutia myrtina, and Rinorea arborea.
