This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1859. It has a broad distribution across tropical regions, including South Africa, The Gambia, Mali, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Japan, and eastern Australia—specifically the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland. The wingspan of adult individuals reaches approximately 20 mm.
