About Dryopteris wallichiana (Spreng.) Hyl.

Dryopteris wallichiana, commonly called the alpine wood fern, is a robust fern species belonging to the Dryopteridaceae family. It is either deciduous or semi-evergreen, and is native to the Himalayas, Hawaii, Mexico, and Jamaica. It typically grows 90 cm (35 in) tall and 75 cm (30 in) wide, and may occasionally reach 180 cm (71 in) in height. It produces pale green tripinnate fronds that contrast strongly with the plant's dark brown ribs. Its Latin specific epithet wallichiana honors Nathaniel Wallich, a 19th-century Danish botanist. It is a popular cultivated plant, and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
