Dryopteris cycadina, commonly known as the shaggy shield fern or black wood fern, is a fern species belonging to the family Dryopteridaceae. It can be either deciduous or semi-evergreen. It is native to northern India, China, Taiwan, and Japan. This fern grows from erect rhizomes, reaching a maximum size of 60 cm (24 in) tall and 45 cm (18 in) wide. It produces fronds that emerge pale green and mature to a dark green color. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
