About Doryanthes palmeri W.Bull
Taxonomic Classification
Doryanthes palmeri, commonly called the giant spear lily, is one of just two species in the genus Doryanthes and the family Doryanthaceae. Both species in this group are endemic to eastern Australia.
Growth Form
This plant is a succulent perennial that grows in a rosette form. Its hairless, sword-shaped leaves can reach around 3 meters (10 feet) in length.
Flowering Characteristics
In spring, flowers emerge from a stalk that may grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) tall.
Conservation Status
Under the New South Wales Threatened Species Act (1995), Doryanthes palmeri is classified as Vulnerable.
Cultivation Notes
It is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It cannot tolerate frosts, so it needs protection over winter when grown in temperate zones.
Cultivation Requirements
It requires a sheltered position in full sun.
