About Dorcacerus barbatus (Olivier, 1790)

Dorcacerus barbatus reaches a body length of 26 to 33 millimetres, which equals 1.0 to 1.3 inches. In males of this species, antennae are longer than the body. This beetle feeds on Prosopis flexuosa, which belongs to the legume family (Leguminosae), and on the invasive weed Lantana camara, which belongs to the verbena family (Verbenaceae). Because of this feeding behavior, it is considered a potential biocontrol agent. This species can be found in forests located in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Suriname, French Guiana, Guyana, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina.
