About Dolba hyloeus Drury, 1773

Dolba hyloeus, commonly known as the pawpaw sphinx, has a wingspan of 50–68 millimetres (2.0–2.7 in). The cryptic coloration of this moth appears similar to that of certain Noctuid moths, including members of the genus Catocala. However, at rest, the pawpaw sphinx does not overlap its forewings, leaving part of its abdomen exposed. It can be distinguished from the rustic sphinx (Manduca rustica) by its smaller size, and by the absence of the orange dots that appear on the rustic sphinx's abdomen when it is in flight. The pawpaw sphinx is distributed throughout the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. Its range extends south to Florida, and west to Wisconsin, eastern Oklahoma, and southern Texas.
