About Dodonaea pinnata Sm.
Dodonaea pinnata Sm. is a spreading, dioecious shrub that usually reaches a maximum height of 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches). Its leaves are imparipinnate, with a total length of 14 to 38 millimeters (0.55 to 1.50 inches), and grow from a petiole 4.0 to 5.5 millimeters (0.16 to 0.22 inches) long. The species typically has ten to sixteen narrowly egg-shaped leaflets, which are densely hairy, sometimes have their narrower end toward the base of the leaflet, and have rolled-under edges. Flowers grow singly on a pedicel 3.5 to 3.6 millimeters (0.14 inches) long, and have four or five egg-shaped sepals 1.6 to 4.5 millimeters (0.063 to 0.177 inches) long, plus eight to ten stamens. The ovary is hairy, and the fruit is a four-winged capsule 14 to 21 millimeters (0.55 to 0.83 inches) long and 15.5 to 18 millimeters (0.61 to 0.71 inches) wide, with leathery wings 3.5 to 6 millimeters (0.14 to 0.24 inches) wide. This species of Dodonaea grows only in the Hawkesbury and Nepean river systems near Sydney, where it inhabits forest on soils formed from sandstone.
