About Dodecatheon clevelandii subsp. clevelandii
This taxon, also referred to as Primula clevelandii, is spring deciduous: it dies back completely to the ground after rains stop. It grows basal clumps of leaves that reach up to 40 centimeters in total length. Its flowers range in color from magenta to deep lavender to white. The flowers are nodding, each measuring roughly an inch long, and grow on stems that can reach up to one foot tall. This species hybridizes with Primula hendersonii, and can be distinguished from that species by its green stem. The plant is native to California and Baja California, and it typically grows in open grassland habitats.
