About Diuris nigromontana D.L.Jones
Diuris nigromontana D.L.Jones, commonly known as the Canberra donkey orchid, is a tuberous, perennial herb. It produces two linear leaves that are folded along their length. Between two and eight yellow-orange flowers grow on a flowering stem that can reach up to 350 mm (14 in) tall. Its dorsal sepal is tall, usually erect, roughly triangular in shape with a bluntly pointed tip. Its lateral sepals are crossed, and usually not turned backwards. The petals are typically erect, ranging from egg-shaped to round. The labellum has brownish markings and is divided into three lobes, with relatively large, oblong side lobes. Flowering takes place in October and November. This orchid species is similar to Diuris semilunulata, but differs by having a brighter yellow flower shade, less prominent darker markings, and erect petals. It grows in shrubby woodland and forest, and is locally common in areas around Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory.
