About Disa spathulata (L.f.) Sw.
Disa spathulata (L.f.) Sw., commonly known as Oupa-Met-Sy-Pyp, is a perennial geophyte that belongs to the genus Disa. It grows in fynbos and renosterveld vegetation, and is endemic to South Africa’s Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces. Its distribution ranges from Nieuwoudtville, south to Bredasdorp, and east to Touws River. Large sections of this species’ native habitat have been converted to cereal and wheat cultivation, particularly in the areas of Caledon, Worcester, Tulbagh, Ceres, and Piketberg. Remaining populations of Disa spathulata now grow between ploughed fields, in orchards, and along road shoulders. The exact conservation status of this species is currently unknown, and will not be confirmed until a comprehensive assessment of the species is completed. There are two recognized subspecies: Disa spathulata subsp. spathulata, and Disa spathulata subsp. tripartita (Lindl.) H.P.Linder.
