About Disa lugens Bolus
Disa lugens Bolus, commonly known as the blue bonnet disa, is a perennial geophyte in the genus Disa that grows as part of fynbos vegetation. This plant is endemic to the Eastern Cape and Western Cape of South Africa, with a distribution ranging from the Cape Peninsula to Somerset East and Cathcart. It was once abundant across its range, but extensive habitat destruction has occurred due to urban and coastal development. The last known specimen on the Cape Flats was recorded in the 1970s, and the species is now considered extinct in that location. Urban development in the Port Elizabeth area, development on coastal lowlands, and overgrazing and crop cultivation in the Eastern Cape have all had negative impacts on the species' populations. In 2007, a large subpopulation of approximately 500 to 1000 plants was discovered in the Cathcart area. Unlike some related species, Disa lugens does not require fires to trigger flowering. Two varieties of Disa lugens are currently recognized: Disa lugens var. lugens and Disa lugens var. nigrescens (H.P.Linder) H.P.Linder.
