It is native to South Africa, where it grows naturally in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga. This species can also be found growing in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
