About Dira clytus Linnaeus, 1764

Dira clytus, commonly known as the Cape autumn widow, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is found in South Africa. Its wingspan measures 45 to 55 millimeters. Adults of the subspecies Dira clytus clytus have a flight period from late February to April, while adults of the subspecies Dira clytus eurina are on wing from late February to late March. The species produces one generation per year. The larvae of Dira clytus feed on multiple species from the grass family Poaceae; these recorded host species are Ehrharta erecta, Pennisetum clandestinum, Stipa dregeana, Panicum deustrum, Stenotaphrum glabrum and Stenotaphrum secundatum.
