Diplognatha gagates (Forster, 1771) reaches a body length of approximately 16 to 32 millimetres (0.63 to 1.26 inches). Its thorax is very convex, and the body surface is a shining black or reddish color. Young adults are typically reddish brown; these young adults feed on flowers, fruits, and sap, while the larvae of this species feed on bird droppings. This species is widespread across almost all African countries located south of the Sahara Desert.
