Diplacus torreyi is an annual herb that grows 4 to 38 centimeters tall. Its oppositely arranged leaves are generally oval in shape and can grow up to 4 centimeters long. The tubular base of the flower is surrounded by a thin, green, lightly hairy calyx made of sepals. The flower corolla measures 1 to 2 centimeters long, split into a reflexed upper lip and a slightly protruding lower lip. The flower is pink, with two gold stripes bordered by magenta inside its mouth, and it usually has no spotting or other additional markings. This species is endemic to eastern montane California. It can be found in high mountain ranges from the southern Cascades, through the entire Sierra Nevada, into the Tehachapi Mountains. It grows in open and disturbed mountain habitat types, including rock outcrops.
